On this page we have activities to engage, challenge and enrich your child's learning experience. We have activities listed that will compliment what we teach through out the school year. Language Arts - Read a fiction book and create a book report/project. Once your child has chosen a book at their level (your child's teacher can have suggestions for this), create a poster (wanted poster, draw a bike and put details of characters, problem, how it's solved, in the wheels, seat, etc. to list a few ideas) venn diagram, a written report, etc. to give a summary of the book read. Be creative! Can present to class.
Science - create a simple machine. Write a paragraph on the purpose, why this machine would be helpful, how it works etc.
Social Studies/Math - Importance of symbols. Maps have a legend that tells what the different symbols mean on a map. Take a look at different maps and research what they mean, what other symbols are used, etc. Create your own map of your house, bedroom, Loomis, Granite Bay, etc. Create your own symbols or use ones you have discovered that you think would be useful on your map. Please include a legend on your map.
Language Arts- Read a non- fiction book and create a book report/project to explain what you have read. Show us what you can do - create a mobile, drawing, diagram, model, etc.
Science- Find a rock in your yard, playground, soccer field, etc. What type of rock is it? Sedimentary? Is it a crystal? Can you scrape it easily? Try to find out what type it is and how common it may be in our state (or town).
Social Studies - Slaves often used symbols sewn on quilts to get out a message when making a plan to escape. Songs were used as well to tell the time and place of when the escape was going to happen. Research some of these songs and symbols and create either a song or a quilt with symbols. (Paper/tag board works really well!)
Language Arts - Fairy tales can have different endings, details, even different characters. Especially if they come from a different country. What is your favorite fairy tale? Is there more than one version? If so, read two different ones and write about the differences and similarities of the books.
Science - What is your favorite bug or insect? Do some research and find out what this insect is all about! Maybe you can even catch one and observe it's eating habits, does it change colors, does it change size? How long does it live.
Social Studies - We often hear about Paul Bunyan and his blue ox Babe, John Henry, Davy Crockett, Pecos Bill, Calamity Jane, and many others. Take a look at some of these characters and create your own character. Then, write a tall tale about their adventures!
Math- Practice using money. Create a game or even set up a store to practice adding up totals, making change, etc. When going to the grocery store, have your child calculate the total, have them find out which product is the better price, etc. Multiplication facts are worth practicing as well. This can be done in the car, home, going to soccer practice, etc.
